Gospetunes Devotional (Date: 4th January, 2019)
THEME: Praise Be To God
PASSAGE: Psalm 124
Psalm 124:1-2 opens with: ‘If it had not been the Lord who was on our side,”… “If it had not been the Lord who was on our side…” You may wonder why the repetitions, it is to emphasise God’s power of deliverance from the snares of the devil. You will understand the weight of the Psalmist’s words if you had encountered and escaped violence or threat to your life. Saturday, 5th May, 2018, came readily to the mind of this contributor, when he escaped from the hands of robbers on Anthony Bridge, Lagos – Ikorodu Expressway, unharmed and without anything taken away from him besides the glasses of the two back doors of his official car that were shattered! No bullet or knife wound! The only weapon of defence was a thunderous shout of the name of Jesus.
Many of us might have had such miraculous interventions and escapes where ordinarily we would not have been able to do anyhting by ourselves. Yet we overcome all the numerous dangers and perils of 2018. Therefore, our mouths should be filled with songs of praise to God Almighty for all His marvelous deeds in our lives and families. Let us extol and worship the Lord our Saviour and Redeemer for who He is, not only for what He does or did not do. God is God and reigns forever and ever. No one can overthrow nor defeat God and there is none comparable with the Lord.
It is a serious mental illness to think that there is nothing like satan or an enemy seeking to devour you or make life miserable for you. If babies, who are just coming into the world, have enemies, it is stupidity for anyone to think or say that he/she is free from enemies. The poor have and the rich have, too. Sometimes, standing for truth and righteousness and honesty in the fear of God attracts more opposition and spiritual attack. Such opposition can also be intellectual, psychological, spiritual, physical or violent attacks which could come up in so many unimaginable ways. St Paul wrote about the nature of our warfare in 2Corinthians 10:4-6; Ephesians 6:10-18; 1 Peter 5:8-11. Please, read those passages. So, mercies on you, your family, relatives and the nation. Do so as many times as possible every day.
MEMORY VERSE: Psalm 124:6 ‘Praise be to the Lord, who has not let us be torn by their teeth.’
PRAYER: Praise be to God who daily fights our battles and overcomes for us in Christ Jesus. Amen.
